Australians & MS

I will try and list some info about Australians that either have MS or are involved with MS in some way, I guess they will be more so well known Australians, after all there is about 15,000 of us. I also have a section for MS People Profiles although not many seem to want to take up the offer of a free Profile page.

Betty Cuthbert

Betty Cuthbert is known as "The Golden Girl".

"She won four Olympic gold medals for Australia, the highest number won by any Australian track and field athlete.

In beating the world's best, this golden-haired runner raced her way into the hearts of millions of Australians.

When Betty was born, in 1938, her mother was shocked to find she wasn't having just one baby - but two!

George Jelinek

Multiple sclerosis is on the rise in Australia, and no one knows why. Could part of the reason be that some people aren't getting enough sun and they're getting MS as a result? Dr George Jelinek is convinced this is the case. Since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis himself five years ago he sunbathes whenever he can. In fact George embraces a number of 'alternative therapies' to treat his MS. He sticks to a strict diet and even meditates every day, because he believes his state of mind affects his health. The surprise is that George is not some new-age doctor, but well and truly a member of the medical establishment: he is Professor of Emergency Medicine at Perths Charles Gairdner Hospital. After being diagnosed with MS he combed all the medical literature on the disease, and he believes there's a great deal of evidence that the alternative therapies his using do work.
