Fragmentation: If you have added new
programs/applications to your harddrive or deleted files you no longer
use, the chances are your harddrive will be fragmented.
CD/DVD Burners
With the use of CD/DVD burners creating temporary files,
which usually get deleted when the task is finished, you will find your
harddrive will be very fragmented. This mean's that as the files are
added then deleted, there will be free spaces, which can result in a
decrease in performance.
Fragmented Files = Poor Performance
This happen's when the harddrive is looking for the
files that are needed for the next process, if they are not in a certain
order the search takes much longer. You will notice your computer slowing
down more and more as the harddrive gets more fragmented.
Add/delete causes fragmentation
Fragmentation is just a normal part of computer use,
whenever you add or delete files, this could be from doing something
as simple as your resume', obviously the bigger the files the more fragmentation.
Don't freak there is a solution to this problem !
Fragmentation = Defragment
Defragment: Quite obvious when you think about it, to
find this windows Tool, open my computer and find your C:\ Drive generally
you will only have one harddrive although you can have more, if you
do, this process applies to all harddrives remember CD Roms will usually
start with the D:\ Drive.
My Computer Right Click C:\ Properties Tools
If you tried cutting and pasting in the last tips section you will know
about Right Clicking your mouse to bring up a menu of options. Right
click on your C:\ Drive and select the properties option this will bring
up a new box, ' Properties ' this box has Tabs with different options.
Select ' Tools ' you will see three ' Tools ' in here, we only need
concern ourseleves with the ' Defragmentation ' tool in this tutorial.
Defragment = Performance Gain = Less Stress
Click the ' Defragment Now ' button and away you go. You now know what
defragmentation is and how to do it ! N.B. It's best to Defragment when
you aren't using your computer, as this just upsets the process and
you will find it keeps restarting and it will take forever. I usually
Defragment while I'm asleep, if there are no problems it should be done
when you wake up. You should see at least some performance gain maybe
even a significant gain.
Defragment Like Getting your Car Tuned
If you do a lot of burning, word processing or gaming etc. you should
do this quite regularly, maybe even once a week but at least once every
3 months if you just surf the web. When I am doing video editing or
burning I find i may have to do it daily but that is quite extreme.
If you find you are making more coaster's than readable disc's I would
definately try defragmenting before I would think the burner is faulty.
