Setting up a Server

As of the 1st of February 2005 I have been in the precess of learning how to set up my own Server for my LAN and to serve my own websites etc. I will talk about what I have learnt whilst doing this. Plz Note: I am just an enthusiast who is learning as i go so don't blame me if you have no success. As I upgrade my PCs the server will be upgraded too. Remember all of this website is based on Free stuff or minimal cost, yes i do have some scottish in me hehehe.

Hardware Requirements

Well after doing my research on the software required and what that softwares hardware requirements were, I realised that I already had what was at least minimal requirements for the software I was going to use for my Server. I had an old P2 Intel based PC with a 333Mhz processor and 66 Mb of Ram. Note this is a minimum requirement.

Server Software

After lots of research and hours reading forums and how tos I found SME Server software, it had everything I wanted cheap (free) downloadable and Linux Based. You do not have to know anything about Linux to get it running. You just download the ISO image burn it to disk and away you go. Woohoo I now have the hardware and software to set up a simple yet highly effective Server for my needs. For all Information on SME Server Software go to the Link Below.

Other Things You Need

This could be a long section lol. In my case I wanted to set up a web server so I needed a DSL internet connection with preferably a Static IP address. I use aanet for this, basic plan at the moment but will upgrade as and when I need to. If your adsl doesn't offer Static IP addresses, there are many web sites that can automatically change your Dynamic address into a Static address and are recognized by SME Server Install. Domain Name, I have 2 : passingiton.info and aussiesmallbiz.com, passingiton is hosted by HostPac, now I want to try and host aussiesmallbiz.com myself. I have heard godaddy has cheap domains I paid too much for my domains and will be transferring them when they expire.

Name Server

This is what Identifies yourdomain.com with an IP address so you dont have to type in IP addresses of web sites, just the sites name, makes it much easier to remember names instead of IP numbers lol. I found 2 places that offer free name server services Zonedit and the one I am trying GraniteCanyon
